Women and Whiskey
How women are raising the bar and enjoying the spirit
A key market in the consumption of spirits in restaurants, bars and hotels across the U.S., women have increasingly started to enjoy—and even favor—whiskey. With more than 62,000 Instagram posts published with the hashtag #WhiskeyGirl, these female whiskey drinkers are debunking the gender stereotype that the spirit is enjoyed only by men. Millennials (including young women) are now more open than ever to experiencing a variety of whiskey-aging techniques and cocktail flavor innovations, paving the way to their own personal whiskey cocktail journeys. To try something new—and perhaps push whiskey drinkers to a new level—check out this recipe for “Raising the Bar.”
Raising the Bar:
2 ounces Woodford Reserve rye whiskey
1 ounce fresh lemon juice
0.5 ounce fresh egg white (optional)
1.25 ounces almond syrup (see recipe below)
13 ounces boiling water
13 ounces granulated sugar
2 ounces almond extract
Stir and combine all ingredients until balanced.
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a rocks glass over crushed ice. Garnish with a lemon peel twist, and serve.
